Since then, things have settled into a new, but also somewhat into an old, “normal.”   This event was the catalyst for many emotions, questions, suspicions, memories, fears, doubts, air, water, earth oops lol. Let’s try that again.   This event shook up the fine clay particles of my life, and suspended them into a cloudy mess. It takes a long time for sediment to collect at the bottom of a liquid. Likewise, it took a year for my relationship with my parents to settle down. Ha, looks like the elements did have a place in my list! I feel compelled to share my story because it’s different than common coming out narratives. I’ve seen so many YouTube coming outs met by a parent’s loving affirmation. And on the other end, I’ve heard so many scary stories about coming out resulting in being kicked out or disowned or worse.   My coming out was more in-between, meant different things for each of my parents, and simultaneously did and didn’t alter my family dynamic. If you insiiiiiiiiiiiiiiist. I first came out to my mom. After months of scheming and plotting how to get the words lodged firmly in the back of my throat out, I finally came up with a simple solution!   While helping my mom clean the bathrooms, I would tell her to find her phone that I hid 10 minutes prior. And in the time she’d spend finding it, I would send her a three line poem that cryptically expressed that I needed to tell her something. And then she would spend the next hour pulling my teeth until what I wanted to tell her seeped out. Easy, right? As you can tell by my sarcasm, no. I’m laughing about my elaborate plan in retrospect, but in the moment, I remember how I didn’t know what else to do. I felt so desperate to get the words out, yet so gut-wrenchingly terrified. I needed to get closer to the words so they’d get out of my damn mouth, but every ounce of my being, every one of my atoms, was hurtling away from them. It was like running on a treadmill. I wasn’t getting anywhere. When I finally did it, do you know what the words that came out (ha) of my mouth were? Because I never once uttered the words to my mom. So, I had to say something grounded in reality, not an abstract word. While hiding my face behind my laptop, I mumbled that I wanted to hangout with this guy. I could see my mom’s face changing, as the gears started turning, as the suspicions she must have had came together. She cried, yelled, and barged out of the house. She had a physical therapy appointment she was already running late for, but she clearly didn’t run out because of that. She needed to be alone.   When she came back, she was still devastated and shocked. “Are you sure?” “Is it my fault?” “How could this be true?” These memories live in my mind as one ugly blur, but I think the next thing that happened, happened the next day. My mom decided she wanted to tell my dad. If my mom’s reaction was like the spark of a match, my dad’s reaction was like the explosion of a bomb. He roared curses, slammed doors, yelled threats. My dad doesn’t cry, because “men don’t cry.” But he cried that day. For the first time in ten years. The next two days were incredibly hard. I was scared of my dad. I was scared to sleep. I cried, as I deleted messages and pictures from my phone, in case my dad would steal my phone and go through it. We went to family therapy. But it didn’t help. Not at all. My dad doesn’t believe in science, or educated people, and wouldn’t budge from his point of view that homosexuality is completely unnatural, fake, and caused by reading milenial blogs. After these days of extreme tension, my mom stepped up. She is the hero of this story. When my dad was at work, she came up with a plan. She told me to tell him I was just confused. She told me she knew him better than I did, and it would be the only way to make living at home bearable for me before I went back to MIT.   When my dad came home from work, I blatantly lied, convincing him I didn’t know what I was thinking, and actually wanted desperately to like girls and that this upcoming year I would try. As I shoved myself back deeper into the closet, my dad’s eyes showed warmth for the first time in days. He loved me, but on his terms.   About 10 days after that, I was back at MIT to start junior year. Things were back to normal. Well, kind of.   With my dad, we just reverted back to how things were before I came out. It was as if a switch flipped. The same way my dad wanted me to reprogram myself to be straight, he reprogrammed himself to forget those two weeks last year even happened. While my dad is stuck firmly solid in time and in his stubborn ways, my mom has been fluidly changing her mindset over the past year.01 My dad is an earth bender. My mom is a water bender. My dad’s eyes show him whatever he wants to see, but my mom’s see the truth. And she either has immense powers of perception, or I’m a horrible liar, or both. Because when I would try to hide the fact that my long distance boyfriend was visiting me during the semester, she knew.   The first couple times, she was upset, like really upset. It made me confused about what to do, because I saw how much pain her knowing about these visits caused her. I felt like I was choosing my happiness over hers, like I was the cause of the pain I saw in her eyes. But the temporary solution of “lying” to my mom about these visits was just that, temporary.   I’m beyond-words grateful for my mom. Because she did in one year what I’m convinced my dad will never be able to do accept me. Over this past spring break, she told me she wants me to be honest with her above all else, that she’s ready for that. She’d rather hear me honestly telling her whenever I’m with my boyfriend, instead of her picking up hints from my lies. And this summer, I did just that. I honestly told her whenever I was with him, and she didn’t get upset. Then one day towards the end of summer, she even told me to invite him over because she wanted to meet him! He came over just a couple days after my one year coming out anniversary. It was really full circle, and amazing to see how much things have changed for the better. So, that’s where I am now. I’m honest with my mom and I’m not with my dad.   And I’m okay with that. As Eugene of the Try Guys said, “there’s a cultural point that [some parents] can’t bring themselves across.”   This isn’t how I imagined coming out would turn out, but I’m happy where things are now. At the age of eight one of my favorite things to do was dream about living in a time where gigantic beasts loomed over the earth. Form the gigantasaurus to the brontosaurus I enjoyed anything from the Precambrian period. I grew to appreciate the monstrous creatures even more after I took my first trip to the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh. I recall roaming through the many displays pretending that I was one of them. Usually, I pretended to be the Troodon, a species that is thought to have the largest brain in proportion to the rest of its body. Even though I was smaller than the rest of the dinosaurs, I always knew that I could outsmart them if I was a clever Troodon. Of course I would forget that they had been extinct for millions of years, as the plaques in front of the enormous exhibits reminded those who were tall enough to read them. But I carried on in my world of dinosaurs while I was in the museum, free to dream as I cared to. The distance and time between the real dinosaurs and I disappeared when I was in the museum, in my little world. Therein lies the significant difference between seeing and imagining, and being told or influenced, that is, being mystified. Mystification, as the art critic John Berger in Ways of Seeing explains, is the process of explaining away what might otherwise be evident (Berger 112). I was instantly captivated from the moment I saw the tied-together skeletons stretching as high as my own house; should I have cared about the petty details that would have distracted me from my own imagination? Original paintings are silent and still in a sense that information never is (Berger 125). The skeletal remains of ancient beasts strung up give only a portion of what such creatures really were millions of years ago. The color of their skin, the texture of their bodies, or even the size of their internal organs are just a few of the endless questions that remain unanswered, lost over time. But museums give something more than any book could ever tell, and that is the real life experience of seeing what could never be perceived otherwise. When life breathed through the dinosaurs they were never frozen into a perfect stance like they are portrayed in museums. Our imagination allows us to fathom what it really may have been like, but the past remains where it is, and can only at its best be relived in movies or museums or our imagination. Museums have never made me feel awkward or uneasy, they come as second nature to me. I enjoy being enveloped by a different emotion each time I look at the skeleton of a dinosaur, or see a mummified pharaoh, or even a beautiful painting of a landscape. I have always been able to let everything go, and be consumed by a striking or stunning image. The wonderful thing about museums is that every few feet there lies an artist waiting to draw you into their world. Artists and their works contained within a single building span over centuries and continents. All contain different points of view and expresses it to the best of their abilities. Today we see the art of the past as nobody saw it before. We actually perceive it in a different way (Berger 112). History meets in a museum, and constantly forms new accounts through time. Each day that passes we have gained something which may add to our overall perception of the world around us. This is why Berger claims that we see things differently and therefore there exists no definitive account of exactly the way things were at any specific moment in time. It is lost forever, and at best, can only be saved in an altered form. There is something magical about the power of the atmosphere of a museum. The silence is filled with a sea of thoughts running through viewers minds. When I first saw John White Alexander s painting Isabella and the Pot of Basil I was immediately captivated. Even my first glance told me that there was something more to the large pot in the painting than meets the eye. In a painting all its elements are there to be seen simultaneously (Berger 121). What the eye can perceive in an instant may take pages to explain. There lies the beauty of art. One glance at Alexander s work captivated me instantly. There lives some hidden secret inside the woman s soul that lay next to the pot. And sure enough, the small plaque beside the painting described a story that told me that my assumptions were correct. The painting was written as a reflection of a poem written by John Keats. Here, briefly, is the story of Isabella and the Pot of Basil. Isabella had two brothers that expected her to marry a well-endowed man so they could collect a significant dowry from her marriage. But Isabella never married, and fell in love with a carpenter named Lorenzo, who was working for brothers. The two were madly in love, and visited each other frequently whenever they were certain that no one could find them together. Soon though, a brother learned of their secret, and the two brothers took Lorenzo into the woods, killed him, and buried him in a shallow grave. One night while Isabella was wailing in bed over the mysterious disappearance of her supposed runaway love, Lorenzo’s ghost came to her and described the occurrences and location of Lorenzo s body. Isabella went to Lorenzo s grave, cut off his head, and took it back home with her where she put it in a big basil pot and covered it with moss, soil, and basil seeds. Without having read the 500-line poem or at least having some knowledge of the story, the average viewer would never have guessed that her lover s head was contained in the pot. The emotions contained within Isabella and her sacred pot reach beyond words. The pain that she felt consumed her to the point of her own death, where no words can exist. Depicted in the painting is not just a sad woman, but a woman who is about to die, sick and miserable with heartbreak, love, and loneliness. The meaning of an image is changed according to what one seen immediately beside it or what comes immediately after it. [It] is distributed over the whole context on which it appears (Berger 123). Only after reading the small plaque beside the work and continued research after visiting completed my perception on the almost life sized piece of art. These important clues added to what I could deduce from the painting. Without them I would merely have seen just a pot of basil and a woman lying next to it. History is a mystery that is continually being investigated. Without knowing the past no deductions can be made of the present. Alexander captures Isabella in a moment of perfect stillness. Perhaps she is already dead in the artist s eyes, lying beside her love, their souls reunited. The barren space below the pot could contain the spiritual body of Lorenzo. Alexander seems to have purposefully left the open space on the right side of the painting for his spirit next to her. Isabella has her eyes closed and her hand is gingerly extended. Her two fingertips brush against the side of the pot, as if she s imagining the pot to be his face. Her neck appears slightly extended as if she were giving the curved pot a gentle kiss. The stench that must have emanated from the pot would have been almost unbearable to others, yet somehow the power of love caused Isabella to ignore all reason and sanity as her soul sought for her love and mercy. White flowers contrast with the overall melancholy of the image yet also add just the right touch of beauty, innocence, and peace. There are several of these flowers directly under the pot and another at the base of Isabella s feet. This white represents the purity of their love that was so terribly destroyed by her evil brothers. The tear of her garment on her right shoulder shows her distress and her apathy towards her self-appearance. Isabella s soul can be at ease once she is reunited with her beloved Lorenzo; her physical condition no longer matters. There are of course many other paintings depicting Isabella and the Pot of Basil, but none seemed to capture the emotion as well as Alexander does. His art is powerful, captivating, and entices the viewer to look deeper, to learn more, and to almost feel the emotions raging through the canvas. The moment I saw the painting, I knew that there was more to it. The stillness that Alexander recreates reaches beyond words, and required only the same silence in return. The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe When in love, the sight of the beloved has a completeness which no words and no embrace can match (Berger 106). Perhaps my heart goes out to Isabella, for I myself am in love and can reconcile with what she may have felt. Even if Isabella was just a fictional character for both Keats and Alexander the emotional consequence of such a painting is undeniable. The love between a man and a woman knows no end, and its eternity continues through people of all time and nations. Of course we are all granted different perspectives, but there lies a central burning passion about love which can only be depicted as a fraction of its entirety. Thus, love in fact, [closes] the distance between the painting of the picture and one s own looking at it (Berger 125). The research that I completed on Isabella and the Pot of Basil introduced a different and more in depth perspective on the work. Without reading the corresponding poem, I would perhaps have seen only a woman standing next to her favorite pot, and be left to imagine what more was involved. My intuition told me that there was more to the painting than what first met my eye. The observations and assumptions that I made based on the picture and poem are based completely my own deductions and learned assumptions that I have acquired throughout my life. Therefore, if John Berger had looked at this image in the same atmosphere as I did, he could have seen something completely different. Therein lies the truest beauty of art, for art is capable of capturing and recreating a moment lost in time without regard to the opinions of those who will see it. Art is beautiful often because we make it beautiful. Big ugly dinosaurs are certainly not beautiful to most, but to me as an eight-year-old, they most definitely were. Being told what is beautiful and what meaning lies behind a painting is the epitome of mystification. According to Berger this lends [undeserved] authority (121) to the artist. The image now illustrates the sentence (Berger 122). And thus, whatever thoughts a viewer has conjured about a painting or work of art are lost, negated, or skewed, yet it provides a strong basis for interpretation. The painting by Alexander exemplifies the poem by Keats. In many instances, poetry is associated with a visual image, but provides only the framework from which a perception of an image can be formulated. Words help set the tone, yet can never deter from the heart of work. I prefer to say that sentences help to illustrate an image. But strangely can't get enough of them, " It seemed to him that he had been so schooled by bitter experience that he might call them what he liked, and yet he could not get on for two days together without the lower race". He is a player, a playboy. He doesn't feel comfortable around men so he focuses his energies on the ladies, "In the society of men he was bored and not himself, with them he was cold and uncommunicative; but when he was in the company of women he felt free, and knew what to say to them and how to behave; and he was at ease with them even when he was silent". He tells women what they want to hear so he can get them to bed, " In his appearance, in his character, in his whole nature, there was something attractive and elusive which allured women and disposed then in his favour; he knew that, and some force seemed to draw him, too, to them." This keeps life simple for him. Anna Sergeyevna is a young woman alone on vacation with her dog. We know she is married but the author doesn't go into her character a great deal, at least not to the extent of Dmitri. Perhaps it's not important. They met while dinning alone at the same place, and spent the rest of the evening walking and talking. At the end of the evening while back in his room, Dmitri thought about her there and was confident that she would get there. " Afterwards he thought about her in his room at the hotel ? though she would certainly meet him next day; it would be sure to happen." A week later they meet again, they spend the day and evening together, he asks her if she may want to go for a drive, she doesn't answer, they kiss, "Let us go to you hotel." And it was as simple as that. Anna's reaction to what has happened is what we expect. She feels guilty and"dirty", "God forgive me, it's awful." She explains how she has wronged herself for many years staying with a husband she didn't respect. "I am a bad woman; I despise myself and don't attempt to justify myself. It's not my husband but my self I have deceived. And not only just now; I have been deceiving myself for a long time. My husband may good be a good, honest man, but he is a flunky!" Dmitri admits that this time feels a little different; "But in this case there was still the diffidence, the angularity of inexperienced youth, an awkward feeling; and there was a consternation as though someone had suddenly knock at the door." But still reacts how we expect him to, "Gurov felt bored already, listening to her. He was irritated by the nave tone, by this remorse, so unexpected and inopportune; but for the tears in her eyes, he might have thought she was jesting or playing at part." They met everyday at noon and spent the day together. She was scared he was persistent. The one-day Anna had to go home. Her husband was sick. She didn't cry but she was so sad she was almost sick. Dmitri was sad to but looked at it as another chapter of his life was over. "And he thought, musing, that there had been another episode or adventure in his life, and it, too was at an end, and nothing left to it but a memory...He was moved, sad, and conscious of a slight remorse. " They will never see each other again. And it was as simple as that. Or was it? Both Anna and Dmitri went home. The author doesn't talk of Anna at all during this time but focuses again on Dmitri. What and How to Learn Start Learning What You Actually Want and Need to KnowIf youre planning a trip to France, learn travel French (airport vocabulary, asking for help). On the other hand, if youre learning French because you want to be able to chat with the French woman who lives down the street, learn basic vocabulary (greetings, numbers) and how to talk about yourself and others- likes and dislikes, family, etc. Once youve learned the basics for your purpose, you can start learning French related to your knowledge and experiences- your job, your interests, and from there onto other aspects of French. Learn the Way  That Works Best for YouIf you find that learning grammar is useful, learn that way. If grammar just frustrates you, try a more conversational approach. Since the late 1980s, discussions about the apparent success of professional and business migrants have supplanted the discourse of migrant disadvantage. As a result of the Federal government's increasing emphasis on credentials and skills in the migration programme, migrants' human capital endowments have increased, apparently resulting in higher labour force participation rates and better employment outcomes. The government argues that migration is more economically efficient than ever before, with migrants adding to government coffers rather than becoming a drain on the public purse (Ruddock, 2003). Contemporary academic research on migrant employment experiences neatly undersco res governmental discourses on migration policy. It is dominated by studies presenting a 'success story' narrative of recent, mostly highly skilled, migrants achieving increasingly positive outcomes in the Australian labour market. These are generally economic, quantitative studies based on the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Australia (LSIA) (Cobb-Clark, 2000, 2001; Cobb-Clark and Chapman, 1999; Richardson et al., 2001, 2002; VandenHeuvel and Wooden, 1999, 2000). The LSIA, commissioned by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA), surveyed migrants about their settlement experiences during their first years in Australia. LSIA1 targeted migrants entering Australia between September 1993 and August 1995, surveying them three times: six months (wave 1), 18 months (wave 2) and three and a half years (wave 3) after arrival. LSIA2 targeted migrants entering Australia between September 1999 and August 2000, surveying them twice: six months (wave 1 ) and 18 months (wave 2) after arrival (see DIMIA, 2002, for more information about the LSIA). Weighted data were used in the analyses for this article to offset the attrition rate in the sample over the three waves. These studies continue a dominant tradition within social science research on migration, namely an approach derived from human capital theory. Essentially an 'application of neo-classical economics to labour markets' (Wooden, 1994: 220), human capital theory has become the prevailing wisdom within academic and business circles for explaining the economic success of individuals, firms and nations. Human capital theory emerged in the 1970s in the writings of economists such as Mincer (1974) and Becker (1975) to explain differences in individual earnings. La lucha contra la coca es un pretexto para que Estados Unidos domine a Amà ©rica Latina, para que domine a nuestro pueblo, para que viole nuestra soberanà ­a’. Segà ºn Evo Morales, esa produccià ³n no es ilegal debido al hecho que no produce la cocaà ­na, sino sà ³lo produce una industria de la cultivacià ³n de la coca. Aunque existe la ley 1008 (del aà ±o 1988) que pretende controlar la cultivacià ³n y por eso el trà ¡fico de la cocaà ­na, parece que es posible leer la ley en una manera para quienquiera la necesita. Aunque los estados internacionales la consideran algo con que se puede penalizar, muchos prefieren continuar el uso como derecho humano. Segà ºn a muchos cientà ­ficos, es difà ­cil entender los efectos negativos de la coca. En Bolivia, muchos de los indios que consumen la hoja para razones tradicionales o medicinales tambià ©n sufren de otros problemas. Segà ºn Lester Grinspoon y James B. The eventual success of a person is realized through self understanding and actualization and not through relentless manipulation of material resources. Successful reconciliation of personal, organizational, and cultural values and ethics require a number of strategies, some of which are discussed below Communication: Communication is requires towards establishment of rapport with each diverse group. People within a large organization differ not only from their cultural, religious, and social orientations, but also from their professional orientation and interests. These differences widen when many different functional units of an organization, with their philosophies and approach towards work, are required to undergo technology amalgamation (Harris, 1993). These differences often lead to conflicts in the personal and cultural value system, which lead to conflict at workplace, distress in personal and professional life and issues in integration with the organizational setup (ibid). Communication is the key to resolve this deadlock, without causing any antagonistic and negative feelings. People should be aware that organizations are dependent on successful coordination among number of teams and people. Hence they should try to initiate measures that would avoid projecting any conflict or confrontation in interests within the organization. They should be sensitive to each other’s ethnic, social, religious and individual backgrounds and understand their views as sum of their personal growth Sometimes people resent opinions of others, involve their ego and stop to cooperate, coordinate or understand the need to assimilate their juniors and seniors to achieve organizational goals (Swanson, 2005). A successful communication strategy shall effectively address these problems at their inception point and ensure that they do not emerge as any significant stumbling block in ideological merging of various cultural groups (Rahim, 2001). Ensuring Interconnectedness Understanding the collective responsibility and appreciation of team work and group interaction is necessary in embedding the value culture that helps in the reconciliation approach. This would help people to come out of their individual shells and get integrated with their colleagues (Harris, 1993; Rahim, 2001). Understanding inherent organizational contradictions It is important to teach people about recognizing and respecting that contradiction occurs in other people, their experience and circumstances, their view points, their ideological background and their value based system. Understanding the role of crises A timely recognition that crises and conflicts are inbuilt of component of life and progress is achieved by incorporating them in the philosophy towards life should be able to show people that above all the things, they require harmony, and cooperation for things to successfully work (Rahim, 2001) Kinship with others The communication expert should specifically stress on building associations and help in realizing that every one is important and deserves equal respect from others. It is the first requirement of building strong and lasting bonds within any organization. The approach of communication in the entire process of negotiation is concerned with the messages that are transferred among negotiators and the concerned parties. Reconciliation of Ethics Business and ethics are always considered opposite to each other. The general conception of business is that it is a commercial activity with aims to earn maximum income and maximize profit where levels of deceit, subterfuge, and conceit are much higher than socially seen or found (Swanson, 2005). However, this concept of business is archaic and medieval. Today, most of the businesses have developed their own philosophies, which although not exactly philanthropic, but contains a broad social and human vision, and attempts to see business activities as integral part of comprehensive human functions. Modern business is as much based on cardinal principle of profit maximization as on the neo-thoughts of values, morals and ethics. The foundation of business world is on ethics of honesty and commitment where contacts are honored, promises are maintained, and rights of property are observed. Observing ethical values and practices indeed brings positive results as ethical companies face less problems, less litigation and less regulations (Guy, 1990). Corporate Values and corporate culture Ethics are not stand-alone concepts or abstract morals that are hung on wall for ocular delights. They are values and best practices that should be embedded in the working culture that corporations, in their attempts to promote business ethics and best practices, should ensure that their employees are well aware of the values and principles that the corporation aims to pursue. The concept of organizational culture has emerged as most enduring and successful business concept in the ethical dimensions (Bjerke,1999). Business managers, academicians, and corporate leaders all agree that organizational culture as a part of business strategy is crucialfor a firm to maintain and sustain the high standards of operation, decision making and future planning while ensuring expansion, innovation, and entrepreneurship (Oden, 1997). The role of organizational culture, in promoting ethical behavior and establishing organization wide accepted norms and working principles is paramount and it is recognized in the corporate quarters, that evolving a healthy organizational culture is probably the best method to create ethical, value based, principled and visionary business practices (Swanson, 2005). Essay Skylock in Shakespeare´s Merchant of Venice Villian

One of the earliest idioms taught to students of all ages is â€Å"Don’t judge a book by its cover.† Oftentimes, a quote like that can easily be disregarded, however, it is applicable to people who aren’t always who they seem to be. Shakespeare’s play the Merchant of Venice is an outstanding work that contains a very strange villain in Shylock, who is hated by all, although he has not wronged them in the past. Thusly, his habits and personality evolved from his interactions with the Venetian populous. By examining the changes Shylock displays in tone, Shylock the villain’s motivations can be seen and ultimately display that no matter how twisted a person is or may seem, the motivations behind their actions indicate that innately they have a†¦show more content†¦This correlates almost directly to how most of the other major characters of Merchant of Venice also treat him (e.g. Antonio). However, as is with most cases, there are two sides to each story. To understand the motivation behind Shylock’s obsession with money, the beginning of the play has to be referenced. In Shylock’s negotiations with Bassanio and Antonio, Shylock recalls, â€Å"Signior Antonio, many a time and oft in the Rialto you have rated me about my moneys and my usances†¦ You call me misbeliever, cutthroat dog and spet upon my Jewish gabardine†¦ You called me dog; and for these courtesies I’ll lend you thus much moneys?† (1.3.104-126). From this passage, Shylock’s motivations are presented clearly. He loathes Antonio for how poorly he has treated him in the past, insulting both his character and his religion. Therefore, the motivating factor in lending money to Bassanio is so Shylock has the ability to hold some form of power over Antonio. Therein lies the key to Shylock’s obsession with wealth. In the referenced Venetian culture, Jewish people were persecuted for their religion and were branded uns avory by the predominantly Christian community. Shylock, being ridiculed and domineered his whole life by his Christian counterparts, saw an opportunity to finally even the odds and jumped at it. Shylock clings onto his wealth because it is the only thing that gives him power in Venetian
